ArchivalResource

Lantern slides of Philadelphia buildings, furniture, and American silver and pewter, ca.1915-ca.1947.

Lantern slides, most in black and white, but over 90 in color, most of which show pieces of American silver and pewter or exterior and interior views and details of 18th century homes located in and around Philadelphia. Also included are slides depicting details of doors and windows of various old homes in Philadelphia, 18th century furniture (particularly pieces made by or attributed to William Savery), a few advertisements for Philadelphia furniture and mirror makers, and some art (principally prints from English portraits). In addition to Philadelphia area homes, there is a set of slides depicting the Pennsylvania Hospital. It is not known who assembled this collection, but clearly some of the slides were meant to illustrate talks about 18th century homes in and near Philadelphia. Among the homes depicted are Andalusia, Barren Hill, Wyck, Whitby Hall, Mt. Pleasant, Cannonball Farm, Graeme Park, Solitude, Hope Lodge, Upsala, the Powel house, and Woodlands, the Hamilton home. The slides of silver and pewter are in two groups. One group has pieces made by silversmiths in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, including Paul Revere, John coney, Bartholomew LeRoux, Joseph Richardson, Sr., and Philip Syng, Jr. The other group is divided by form: mugs, tankards, porringers, teapots, etc., most of which are identified by maker. Most of the pieces are from the 18th century, with a few from the early 19th century. Although found together, the slides of Philadelphia buildings seem not to be related to the slides of silver and pewter.
